INVENTORY OF NEEDS
His Excellency Raymond Joseph, Haitian
Ambassador to the United States, expressed his gratitude for the generous
response from the United States at The Situation in Haiti: Greater
Washington’s Response. He urged Americans not to forget Haiti when
the disaster is no longer front page news.
Linda Mathes, CEO of the
American Red
Cross of the National Capital Area, and Major Steve Morris, Area
Commander of the
Salvation Army
– National Capital Area Command, outlined Haiti’s most pressing needs:
-
Financial support. Cash
donations can help purchase specific equipment, food and other
critically-needed goods. Donations of food, clothing and other
commodities are still hard to transport and disperse.
Opportunities to donate in-kind support will be identified when
long-term needs are assessed.
-
Volunteers. The Red Cross is using
volunteers to educate the public about Haiti’s needs and solicit cash
donations. Creole translators are needed to work with rescue teams
in Haiti and legal experts are needed to clarify immigration laws.
-
Blood donations. The constant need
for donated blood has been exacerbated by the situation in Haiti.
The Red Cross has already sent blood to the country and more is needed.
