The aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti is difficult to grasp, but the relief effort is underway and growing daily. Many of Greater Washington’s leaders have already participated in the response efforts, but there is critical need for more support.

THE SITUATION IN HAITI: GREATER WASHINGTON'S RESPONSE

On January 20, Leadership Greater Washington, in partnership with the Greater Washington Board of Trade, convened leaders from the region’s business, nonprofit and government organizations for a briefing on the situation in Haiti, the country’s immediate needs and Greater Washington’s response.

Linda Mathes, CEO of the American Red Cross of the National Capital Area, and Major Steve Morris, Area Commander of Salvation Army – National Capital Area Command, addressed Haiti’s enormous needs and urged monetary donations to buy specific equipment, food and other critical supplies. Acknowledging the outpouring of support from the region, they encouraged companies to suspend in-kind donations until long-term needs are determined.

His Excellency Raymond Joseph, Haitian Ambassador to the United States, first thanked the United States for its generous and rapid response to the disaster. He described the devastation in Haiti and asked the audience not to forget his country when the disaster is no longer front page news.

Stanley Lucas, Director of Communications and External Affairs for the Greater Washington Haitian Relief Committee, spoke to the destruction of Haiti’s infrastructure. He said the country will need help in planning and executing the effort to rebuild and recover.
